A Year of Innovation

Thaumatropes
I promoted S.T.E.A.M. Club at our Winter online celebration! We learned about early forms of animation and created thaumatropes.

Kits Cubed
We organized a pick-up day for the Kits Cubed projects for first grade. This was so popular! By the end of the year I was creating science kits for the entire school.

Lava Lamps with Mission Science
Thanks to Wipro, we were able to fund four class visits from Mission Science which informed our planning for S.T.E.A.M. Club.

Tower Building at Home
Students participated in a tower building challenge from home. This was a really successful activity online because students could try using any materials they had. Their towers had to be free standing.

Exploding Soda Demonstration
Student leader, Taniyah is teaching students and her younger brother how to create a fountain using mentos and coke.

S.T.E.A.M. Club extended to School
When we returned to school, student leaders helped plan and distribute different mini-lessons for the entire school. This is a photo captured by 4th graders. I learned to differentiate lessons by grade level and provide vertically aligned content.

Meeting the Demand
Vita and I began filling orders for mini-lessons at school and advocating for supplies from community partners. Here she is assembling oobleck kits while my students were at PE.

Support from Admin and Community Partners
Our school's principal, office administrator, and student advisor were very impressed with our effort to imporve project based learning at our school. They helped me transport a truck full of donated materials from Camp Edmo's warehouse. I am hoping we can find more ways to increase our supplies by being resourceful and promote sustainability.

Ongoing Project Based Learning is Possible
S.T.E.A.M. Club helped us turn materials that would have otherwise gone to waste into a plan for our school's future project based learning.

Student Centered Planning
Vita and Taniyah consistently requested more hands-on learning for our school. They asked for supplies for themselves and others, and they were overjoyed to know that S.T.E.A.M. Club can continue with even more resurces now that school will reopen.

Former Students Thriving
It was incredible to see my students who have moved onto second grade thriving in Science with their new teacher. They were my focal students for the past two years and now they will be prepared to continue as leaders as they grow older.

Tower Building at School
I continued to work with student leaders to accomidate other teachers as we transitioned back to campus and supported students online. We utilized supply donations to host a school-wide tower building challenge. When our classes had to remain separate, we found ways to stay connected through our shared learning.
